Responsibilities
- Install, configure, upgrade and patch database platforms such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle or MongoDB.
- Monitor performance and tune queries, indexes and server settings to resolve slow transactions and reports.
- Design and test backup, restore and disaster recovery plans, including point-in-time recovery, and verify them regularly.
- Manage high availability with replication, Always On availability groups, clustering or managed cloud services such as Amazon RDS or Azure SQL.
- Control access with roles, least-privilege permissions, encryption and auditing to meet security and compliance requirements.
- Plan capacity, storage and archiving strategies as data volumes grow.
- Review schema changes, migrations and stored procedures from developers and advise on data modelling.
- Automate maintenance, monitoring and alerting with scripts and tools such as SQL Agent, pg_cron or cloud-native services.
- Investigate and resolve incidents such as corruption, locking, deadlocks and failed jobs.
- Document configurations, standards and runbooks for the team.

Requirements
- 5+ years as a database administrator in production environments.
- Deep expertise in at least one of SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL or Oracle, with working knowledge of another.
- Experience with cloud database services such as Amazon RDS, Azure SQL or Cloud SQL and with migrations between platforms.
- Strong skills in query tuning, indexing, execution plans and performance monitoring tools.
- Proven experience with backup and recovery tooling and high availability configurations.
- Certifications such as Microsoft DP-300, Oracle DBA or AWS Database Specialty are an advantage.
- Clear written and spoken English for working with developers and explaining risks to management.
- Reliable high-speed internet, backup power and availability for the client's hours plus agreed maintenance windows.
